Monteleone & Aeropiccola Motors
Manufacture Date Range: 1955-1990’s
-
The 1955 Aeropiccola model FB55 red/grey with no branding is currently considered one of the earliest electric outboard motors manufactured in Italy. The FB55 and FB59 motors were both sold by Monteleone and Aeropiccola under their respective brand names. Currently, it’s unknown which company designed and manufactured these motors.
The pressed aluminum metal construction of these early motors consisted of both rivets and screws. The aluminum is fairly thin, malleable, and can be easily bent out of shape. The Aeropiccola (FB55) style of motor was available in three models. All three had a red top and silver bottom with a similar shape. The main difference in these motors was the branding. The three models are the Aeropiccola motor with no branding, the Monteleone with debossed branding, and the Monteleone with black decal branding.
This motor has a single black battery wire casing with two thinner gauge wires within. These motors were never sold with battery wire terminals, and the wires had bare ends for connection to the power source.
Under the cowl, a rubber band connection is located between the motor and the drivetrain flywheel. This drivetrain setup was unique to the model FB55 Aeropiccola and Monteleone motors. The “tiller arm” for this motor is a simple metal tube protruding from the front of the motor.
There were originally two box styles for the Aeropiccola motors. One box was constructed from a white non-corrugated cardboard material. This gave the box a smooth appearance and clean presentation. The box had a white paper cover with a motor graphic, “Motore Fuoribordo”, “Elettrico 4 + 9 - volt c.c.”, and “Aeropiccola - Torino” along the bottom. The other is a bulkier corrugated cardboard box with a white paper cover featuring the same graphics as the first box.
These motors are still semi-unknown to the collecting community and are very rare.

The 1959 model FB59 is the second generation of motors by Monteleone. This specific model is referred to as the “cream” FB59 by most collectors and came with black decal branding. The FB55 and FB59 motors were both sold by Monteleone and Aeropiccola under their respective brand names. Currently, it’s unknown which company designed and manufactured these motors.
The model FB59 is made with thicker gauge metal than was available in earlier FB55 models. The thicker metal construction made these motors sturdier and less prone to warping and disfigurement. The FB59 style of motor was available in four models. All four had a similar shape but differed in color, branded decals, and unbranded options. The four versions are the Monteleone “cream”, the Monteleone “red” with black decal, the Monteleone “red” with white decal, and the unbranded Aeropiccola: Montlery.
The cream model FB59 has a single thick battery wire casing with two thinner gauge wires within. These motors were never sold with battery wire terminals and were left with bare wire ends for connection to the power source.
The “tiller arm” for this motor was an articulated thin metal arm complete with a small “hand grip”. This new tiller arm style gave the motor a more familiar look to real-world outboards. The box for the model FB59 is non-corrugated, primarily yellow with black Monteleone graphics wrapping around the lower portion. The FB59 box was also hand-stamped with “Motore Fuoribordo ‘59”.
These motors are still semi-unknown to the collecting community and are very rare.

The 1965 Monteleone model FB65 is the fourth generation of motor manufactured under the Monteleone branding. This model features red and white paper decal branding on the sides of the cowl and “FB 61” on the sides of the lower leg.
Although this motor carries the “FB61” embossing, it’s considered an FB65 by the collecting community. The reasoning for this is that, for any “FB61” motor that hasn’t been sold as a standalone (therefore, you’ll never find it in a catalog), the name of that motor is arbitrary because Monteleone never gave it a name.
The FB65 (with branding) only came on the Monteleone Skipper boat. The FB65 (without a label - Uniwerk model) only came on the Uniwerk Ultrascafo boat. Monteleone branded the motor with FB61 in the casting, but the decal shows the “65”. Additionally, there was a large gap between FB61 and FB68. Ultimately, we are deciding this because Monteleone never added it to a catalog that we are aware of.The FB65 “branded” is one of two models available, but the only one branded with Monteleone. The other model available is the Uniwerk (Ultrascafo) Generic 65 plastic motor. Both models feature a similar form and construction. The plastic FB665 models have no on/off switch on the front of the motor.
This motor has a single thick battery wire casing with two thinner gauge wires within. These motors were never sold with battery wire terminals and were left with bare wire ends for connection to the power source. The model FB65 has both an articulated tiller arm and a blue transom bracket. Each is attached with flathead screws.

The 1968 model FB68 - Carniti HP50 is the fifth generation of motor manufactured under the Monteleone branding. This model is referred to as the “Carniti” due to “Carniti HP50” appearing on the side cowl decal. This motor is often seen with the “Monteleone” and “Carniti HP50” decals swapped on either side of the motor. This is a factory-correct variation, as the decals could be adhered to either side by factory employees during manufacturing.
The model FB68 is made from durable white plastic with a black plastic prop and transom bracket. The transom screws are metal flathead machine screws.
There are two models of this motor. The Monteleone Carniti HP50 is branded, and the Robbe/Monteleone is unbranded. Both are similar in construction and coloring. The Monteleone Carniti HP50 motor comes with a paper decal branding.
The Monteleone Carnitit HP50 model FB68 has a single thick battery wire casing with two thinner gauge wires within. These motors were never sold with battery wire terminals and were left with bare wire ends for connection to the power source. The box for the FB68 is very similar to previous Monteleone boxes. This box is non-corrugated, primarily yellow with black Monteleone graphics wrapping around the lower portion. The notable difference for the Monteleone Carnitit HP50 FB68 box “Motore Fuoribordo Elettrico «Carniti»” is printed on the lower front of the box.
The Monteleone Carnitit HP50 was originally sold separately and in combination with some Monteleone boats. These motors are still semi-unknown to the collecting community, but the Carniti HP50 is one of the more common Monteleone motors available.
Notable Traits:
Roughly 1:9 Scale – apx 5 inches tall
on/off switch located in front of motor
No wire terminals
One of two models available in this style
Primarily glued plastic construction
Articulated transom clamp with both 180° swivel and 90° tilt

The 1968 model FB68 - Robbe/Monteleone is the fifth generation of motor manufactured under the Monteleone branding. This version is referred to as the “Robbe” due to this model being offered with Robbe branding on the box. This motor has no visible branding.
The Robbe/Monteleone model FB68 is made from durable white plastic with a black plastic prop and transom bracket. The transom screws are metal flathead machine screws.
There are two models of this motor. The Monteleone Carniti HP50 branded and the Robbe/Monteleone unbranded versions.
The Robbe/Monteleone model FB68 has a single thick battery wire casing with two thinner gauge wires within. These motors were never sold with battery wire terminals and were left with bare wire ends for connection to the power source.
The box for the “Robbe” FB68 is currently unknown. Presumably, this box has the same non-corrugated, primarily yellow with black Monteleone graphics wrapping around the lower portion as seen with the Carniti HP50. We believe there was possibly a Robbe-branded sticker added to the box post-production. This remains pure speculation until proof can be found.
These motors are still semi-unknown to the collecting community, but the Robbe/Monteleone is one of the more common Monteleone motors available.

The Monteleone black plastic outboards were made in the 1970s/80s/90s and were sold with several boat combos. These motors were never sold as stand-alone offerings.
There are 4 models of motor available. All motors had an identical black body casing with a red prop and featured an embossed “Monteleone” branding just above the lower unit gear box. The differing models are identified by their cowl color and shape. Two models had red cowls, one more bulbous and the other rectangular in shape. The other two motors had white cowls and were almost identical, with a lower profile and more angular shape.
All four models have a single thick battery wire casing with two thinner gauge wires within. These motors were never sold with battery wire terminals and were left with bare wire ends for connection to the power source.
These motors are still semi-unknown to the collecting community. As these models were only sold in combination with Monteleone boats, the exact number and type of models made in the 70s/80s/90s is still largely unknown. As more marketing materials and catalogs are discovered, we will continue to expand our database and descriptions.
